PREPARATION AND APPLICATION
EMISSION TESTING
All areas to be treated for moisture protection must be tested in accordance with ASTM F1869-03 Calcium Chloride test to determine the vapor transmission rate in lbs./24 hours/1000 sq. ft. of application area. Or ASTM F2170-04 to determine RH (Relative Humidity). All areas must also be tested for alkalinity. Map the location of all tests and results. Record temperature and humidity conditions. CUTDOWN is a vapor retarder. Slab examination should consider the presence of an intact under-slab vapor barrier.
For concrete slabs with emission levels greater than 8 lbs. MVER use DEPENDABLE VAPORSEAL products, which offer a full 10-year warranty against virtually all moisture levels. Since under-slab moisture can vary significantly and testing measures only one condition, slabs without under-slab barrier may exceed CUTDOWN tolerances and VAPORSEAL should be considered. Contact Technical Services for guidance.

SURFACE PREPARATION
Standard Floor Surfaces:
Standard Floor Surfaces: When using CUTDOWN as a moisture retarder, penetration of the slab surface is necessary for maximum bond and effectiveness. All surfaces to be treated must be sound, solid, clean and absorbtive. Soft dusty or weak layers of concrete must be removed. One way to test the surface is by pressing a piece of duct tape onto the concrete. Remove and inspect the tape. The surface may be considered clean if the tape is clean. Make sure there is no standing water; damp areas must be dried prior application. Polished or very smooth slabs shall be ground, scarified or bead blasted to allow CUTDOWN to soak into pour and bond to slab. Alkalinity in concrete greater than pH of 9.0 shall be reduced prior to installation. For concrete slabs with compressive strengths less than 3000 psi, contact Technical Services. Concrete slabs may be tested with a Swiss hammer test or by core samples to determine minimum required compressive strength of concrete. Concrete must be at least 4" thick to be considered structurally sound, and any separate layer of concrete must be at least 2" thick. CUTDOWN should usually have intimate contact with concrete slabs. Concrete repairs underneath CUTDOWN must be well bonded hydraulic cement materials with only non-reemulsifiable latex additives or other binders impervious to water. All others must be removed and leveling done above CUTDOWN. CUTDOWN may leave an "orange peel" finish that may require leveling with some floors.

Surfaces must be clean and free of any dirt, paint, sealer or any other contaminant that might interfere with the product's penetration and bond. Concrete sealers or other bond breakers must be removed prior to installing CUTDOWN. NOTE: To test for absorptive surface and absence of sealers, place dime-sized drops of water at several places on floor. Water should penetrate concrete within about 30 seconds. If water beads, surface is not ready to receive CUTDOWN.

Wood Floors:
Bond, penetration and performance vary depending on the floor covering and adhesive.  Wood flooring and other flooring that has a tendency to move with temperature and humidity require better penetration and stronger bond to substrate of CUTDOWN. Therefore, when installing these type floor coverings, the concrete must be shotblast to a minimum CSP 3. Also, when installing a self-leveling product over CUTDOWN, the method and extent of surface preparation should follow the recommendations of that self-leveling product.

Adhesive Residue:
CUTDOWN may be used to isolate well bonded (non-soluble) adhesive residue, including cutback. CUTDOWN does not bond as strongly to adhesive residue as to absorptive concrete, but will form an effective membrane. The dark color of cutback will likely show through 2 coats of CUTDOWN, but is not an indication of bleeding through the material. Wood substrates must be secure, free of movement and of underlayment grade. Existing adhesives should be well bonded to substrate. Aggressively scrape surface to remove all loose or soft material and high spots. Water-soluble adhesives should be removed. NOTE: Do not scrape adhesives containing asbestos unless following special asbestos removal procedures. Leveling or patching normally must be completed following CUTDOWN application. Use the appropriate DEPENDABLE patching or self-leveling product to maintain full warranty.

Joints:
Expansion joints should be left intact. CUTDOWN is not warranted against structural movement at joints. Dimensionally stable, or non-moving sawcut control joints, voids and cracks shall be filled by brushing or pouring CUTDOWN into the crack. Any finish leveling should be done over the area when CUTDOWN has dried with an appropriate patch such as SKIMCRETE XL, SKIMCOAT or other DEPENDABLE patch materials.

APPLICATION

Open the container and check the consistency and appearance of the product. Settlement occurs and may require mechanical mixing to provide a smooth consistent material. A two coat application is required to ensure proper coverage rate, measure off the area to be covered. Mark with tape or otherwise measure out the area of floor intended to be covered by the container or containers mixed. Film gauges are also useful to check the thickness of the wet material. With a coverage rate of 300-400 square feet per gallon, wet film thickness should be about 4-6 mils per application, which may vary with surface porosity.

CUTDOWN is normally applied with a 3/8" nap roller, but a 1/8" nap or greater may be used on first coat for more even application if desired. Nap size will depend upon the texture and porosity of the surface. Generally, a thicker nap is more suited for a rough, porous substrate, where as a thinner nap is better suited for a smooth substrate. Either dip the roller into the pail or pour the material into a paint pan. Avoid pouring the product directly on to the surface. Roll with even and consistent strokes, keeping all application back and forth in the same direction, to ensure even application. Allow the first coat to dry at least 3 hours or until dry before beginning second coat. Apply the second coat across the grain or direction of the first or on a diagonal. Final dry film thickness should be 6 mils or more. Allow at least 24 hours prior to application of floor covering – 48 hours where possible.

FLOORING APPLICATION
Most adhesives (including latex, urethane, epoxy and thin set mortars) may be applied directly to the surface. The CUTDOWN surface is non-porous and should be treated as such. Care must be exercised during operation over CUTDOWN so as not to damage membrane. Protect applied CUTDOWN from construction traffic and contamination until covered, as it will attract and hold dirt and other contaminants. Use of protective plastic “booties” over shoes is recommended when walking on it.

CLEAN-UP
Use soap and water to clean tools or excess product while CUTDOWN is wet. Once the material dries and hardens, abrasive removal is required.

LIMITATIONS / PRECAUTIONS
  • Area should be conditioned at 70°F with maximum humidity of 60% for 48 hours prior to application and 72 hours after application. Concrete slab temperature must be a minimum of 55°F. Do not apply over existing coatings, sealers or floor coverings.
  • Material must be protected from freezing and kept at temperatures of 45° to 90°F.
  • Material shelf life is one year when stored in appropriate and described conditions.
  • Cover in 48-72 hours.
  • Do not use over soft, heavy cut back or other spongy surfaces, as film will crack and isolation will fail.
  • Do not nail or penetrate into CUTDOWN.
  • Not recommended where high alkalinity exists. If pH is higher than 9, take measures to reduce.
  • Not an adhesive.
  • Cannot be used as a wear layer or topping.
  • Not warranted to safely reduce emission rate greater than 8lbs (F1869) or RH , Relative Humidity (F2170) greater than 85% at time of testing or at any time during useful life of the product.
  • Not designed to have regular contact with water.
